Crowns
A crown, sometimes called a “cap” is a tooth-like
covering placed over a carefully prepared existing tooth in
order to strengthen, restore and improve the appearance of
the natural tooth. Although crowns serve many functions, the
most common is to support a tooth when there is no longer
sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. Crowns
may also be used to protect the structure of a tooth that
is fractured or broken.
Crowns
are made from gold alloys, high-precious alloys, all-ceramic
or a combination of metal fused to porcelain. We consider
both appearance and function when selecting the most suitable
material for you.
The placement of a crown requires great precision. The tooth
is prepared by removing the outer portion to accommodate the
thickness of the crown. An impression is made to provide an
exact model of the prepared tooth. A temporary crown is then
placed while the permanent crown is being made in a dental
laboratory. Once the finished crown is ready, we make the
necessary adjustments before cementing it in place. Our goal
at Tremont Dental Care is to create crowns that look and feel
as comfortable as your own natural teeth.
The entire procedure takes 2-3 visits to complete and generally
requires the use of local anesthesia.
